1. What is EF English Live?

EF English Live is the online language-learning platform of Education First (EF), a well-established global education group founded in 1996. The platform offers a structured learning experience built on three main components for those who want to learn English:

  • Self-Study: A large online library of interactive content, video lessons, and grammar exercises.
  • Group Classes: Teacher-led 30-minute lessons that start every half hour, available 24/7, and open to learners of different levels. This is the most frequently used part of the platform.
  • Private Lessons: One-on-one, 40-minute personalized sessions with certified native English-speaking teachers.

The platform stands out particularly with its test preparation materials for exams like TOEFL and TOEIC, as well as its detailed curriculum consisting of 16 levels.

2. EF English Live: Pros and Cons (User Experience)

When choosing an online English platform, a feature that is a plus for one person may be a drawback for another. Here are the key points that summarize the overall user experience of EF English Live:

🌟 Pros (Why You May Join)

✔️ Certified Native Teachers: All teachers are trained and native speakers. This helps you improve your accent and fluency.
✔️ 24/7 Live Group Classes: New classes start every 30 minutes, so it is easy to find a time that fits your schedule.
✔️ Structured Curriculum: Self-study lessons help you grow step by step in grammar, vocabulary, and speaking.
✔️ Exam Preparation: Special modules for TOEFL and TOEIC help students prepare for international exams.

⚠️ Cons (Why You Should Think Twice)

✖️ No Price Transparency: Prices are not shown on the website. You must join a sales call to learn the cost.
✖️ Limited Speaking Time: Group classes can have 8–10 students, so personal speaking time is low in a 30-minute lesson.
✖️ Long Contracts: Most plans require a 6- or 12-month commitment. Short options are limited.
✖️ Cancellation Problems: Many users report difficult cancellation, surprise charges, and penalty fees. (More in Section 5.)

3. The "Hidden" Price Problem and 2025 Costs

The most frequently criticized aspect of EF English Live is the lack of price transparency. The platform does not display its prices on the website. To receive a quote, users must provide their personal information and speak with a sales representative by phone.

This strategy is a traditional sales funnel designed to persuade users into long-term and high-cost packages.

💰 Estimated EF English Live Prices (2025)

  • Sales Process: Representatives promote longer 6–12 month packages to increase the platform's perceived value.
  • Monthly Cost Range: For plans requiring at least 12-month commitment, monthly payments range from $89 to $139 USD, depending on the number of private lessons selected.
  • Key Note: These packages usually include ~30 group lessons per month, but private one-on-one lessons are often limited to only 2–4 per month. This is low compared to the price.
  • Summary: If you want clear EF English Live pricing, it is not available on the website; be ready for a sales call before committing.
$89 (Lowest Price)
$139 (Highest Price)

4. User Reviews Analysis

Real user experiences are the most honest indicator of how well a platform actually works. The global review platform Trustpilot is the richest source for EF English Live complaints as well as positive feedback.

Improvements

In the grammar section of self-study, it would be helpful to add markdowns in order to come back and go over the lesson. In the group lessons, it would be wonderful to reduce the number of students per class up to a maximum of 4 because so far, I noticed that the fewer the better, so the teacher can give you better feedback and prolong the conversation for each speaking member.

Deceptive Sales & Unusable Service — Hidden $330 Penalty

Be careful. EF sold me a 12-month course on WhatsApp but intentionally hid the $330 cancellation penalty. The service is unusable and not as described: Massive waste of time. Half of the 40-minute class is spent every day just on "introduce yourself." No real learning happens. They lied about student levels. They promised students would be the same level, but they are not (beginners are mixed with advanced). Poor teachers. Most do not listen, and in some classes, the teacher never asked me to speak a single word. I complained to their support team about these quality issues and they completely ignored my message. But when it's about money, they send endless emails. Now they are trying to charge me $330 to cancel a service that was sold dishonestly and was not delivered as promised.

Although the majority of reviews on Trustpilot (81% are 4- and 5-star) are positive, the 7% of 1-star reviews often point to the same critical issues.

5. Cancellation Nightmare: Pay Attention to Commitment and Cancellation Fees!

The fact that EF English Live subscription plans require a minimum 6- or 12-month commitment makes the cancellation process a critical risk. A large portion of EF English Live complaints are related to this challenging process.

✅ Positive Reviews (Praise)

✔️ Teaching Method: Users like the platform’s teaching method and flexible class schedule (new classes start every 30 minutes).
✔️ Teachers: Professional, native-speaking teachers are seen as the main advantage for improving language skills.
✔️ Mobile App: Users appreciate the app’s ease of use and ability to study from anywhere.

❌ Negative Reviews (Complaints)

✖️ Cancellation & Refund Issues: Main complaints include difficulty reaching support after purchase, unauthorized charges, and high penalty fees for canceling the contract.
✖️ Group Class Inefficiency: Some students report limited speaking time in crowded group classes.
✖️ Price Transparency: Hidden prices and aggressive sales pressure are another common user complaint.

6. EF English Live vs. Competitors: Transparency and the Private Lesson Difference

While EF English Live focuses on group classes and a comprehensive curriculum, modern competitors emphasize one-on-one private lessons, price transparency, and AI-powered tools.

Platforms like Flalingo, in particular, are a strong alternative for users seeking transparent pricing and easy cancellation.

Comparison: EF English Live vs Flalingo

Criterion EF English Live Flalingo
Price Transparency ❌ Hidden (Requires Sales Call) ✅ Transparent (Visible Online)
Minimum Commitment Mandatory 6 or 12 Months Flexible Options (1, 3, 6, 12 Months)
Cancellation Ease ❌ Difficult, Penalty Reports ✅ Easy and Transparent Process
Trustpilot Score 4.1 / 5.0 4.9 / 5.0

7. Conclusion: Who Should Choose EF English Live?

EF English Live is suitable for students who value the discipline of a corporate structure, a large self-study library, and plenty of group classes (speaking practice).

However, the platform is a risky choice for those who are looking for:

  • Flexible Private Lessons: Users expecting more than the limited number of private lessons included in the packages.
  • Price Transparency: Users who want to know the price without a phone call.
  • Commitment-Free Learning: Users who do not want to enter a mandatory 6- or 12-month contract.
  • Easy Cancellation: Users who want to leave easily in case of dissatisfaction.

In summary, EF English Live may be worth considering if you seek the assurance of a big brand and are willing to accept the risks associated with long-term commitments (especially cancellation fees). However, if you prioritize one-on-one learning, transparent pricing, and an easy cancellation process, it makes more sense to explore modern and flexible competitors.

FAQ

Is EF English Live legal?
Yes, EF English Live is a legitimate platform owned by the internationally recognized and established Education First (EF) group. However, its legality does not mean that common complaints about customer service and cancellation processes are invalid.
Can I easily cancel my EF English Live subscription?
Unfortunately, "easily" does not apply to this platform. Cancelling a subscription can be challenging, especially after the 14-day cancellation window. For fixed-term plans (6 or 12 months), a penalty fee of 30% of the remaining payment applies if cancelled within the first 90 days. After 90 days, cancellation is no longer allowed, and the full course fee must be paid.
Does EF English Live offer a free trial?
Yes, EF English Live usually provides a short (typically 7-day) free trial or discounted trial version. Be careful: these trials often automatically convert into paid subscriptions. To avoid charges, you must cancel before the trial ends.
How much does a private lesson cost at EF?
EF English Live private lessons are included within long-term subscription packages (e.g., 2 or 4 private lessons per month) and are not sold separately. The effective cost of a single private lesson depends on the total package price and included services (group classes, materials) and is roughly calculated at $30-$50 USD per lesson. Standalone, non-committed private lessons are not available.
